Renewing Passport Years Early

If you have your passport amended to a new last name, it appears later in the passport book. When a passport is scanned (by a cruise line, for example), the original name is still going to pop up in their system. While you can just show them the name amendment page, it can cause some unnecessary confusion.

With that, a reader asked us if it is possible to renew your passport years early to have it completely changed to her new name.

You can apply for a renewal anytime you want, but be aware that you will lose the remaining validity of the passport (the additional years will not be added on to those left), and you should submit a letter stating why you would like to renew your passport so early.
