Zone Extended for Border Crossing Card Holders in New Mexico
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced today the publication of a notice of proposed rulemaking which would extend the border zone up to 55 miles, from the current 25 mile restriction, for Border Crossing Card (BCC) holders in the state of New Mexico. This proposed change would allow BCC holders to travel to the towns of Deming, Lordsburg and Las Cruces, N.M., stimulating commerce, trade and tourism activity in the area.

How to Renew an Expired Passport
The steps to renew an expired passport depend on the date of issuance, the condition of the passport and how old you were when it was issued. If you were age 15 or younger when the expired passport was issued, it cannot be renewed by mail. If you were age 16 or older when the expired passport was issued but the date of issuance is more than 15 years ago, it cannot be renewed by mail. If the expired passport has been significantly damaged, it cannot be renewed by mail. In all the cases cited above, the applicant must appear at an application acceptance facility and apply for a new passport by submitting Form DS-11 and all supporting documents. Getting a Passport Renewal from Abroad
American citizens can renew passports abroad at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate general. Some embassies and consulates allow passport renewal applications to be sent by mail while others require the applicant schedule an appointment and personally submit the form. Be sure NOT to mail the application to the United States address found on the form. The only exception is American citizens living in Canada. Citizens of the United States who apply for passport renewals from Canada can mail the application and supporting documents to the address on Form DS-82 unless they need a passport in less than 2 weeks. In this case, they should contact the U.S. embassy or consulate general. The time it takes to process a passport renewal abroad can vary widely but applications are frequently processed more quickly when submitted abroad than when they are submitted in the United States. Many locations estimate processing time to be between 2 to 3 weeks. You would have to pay an additional $60 fee for expedited service to get a passport processed that fast in the United States. Applicants who need to get a passport renewed in less time can visit the nearest embassy or consulate general in order to obtain a limited validity emergency passport. This can be replaced with a regular passport at a later date.

There are twenty-five regional passport agencies where American citizens can apply to get passports expedited as quickly as the same day. As a general rule, applicants must present proof of international travel within 2 weeks of the appointment or proof of emergency abroad. Every time the price of oil spikes, it seems, stories start popping up about how gas prices may scare travelers into staying home. Or how this travel season?s hottest trend will be the ?staycation.? There?s good reason for the predictability of those news reports, though, because high fuel prices do affect travelers? plans in a pretty predictable way.
The most dramatic way, perhaps, is that skyrocketing costs at the pumps can be the deciding factor for some travelers, actually keeping them home altogether. Those who do venture out of town may change their plans ? opt for a shorter trip; stay in a cheaper hotel; eat out less/choose less pricey restaurants while on vacation; or spend fewer dollars on souvenirs and entertainment. People talk about oil being a limited natural resource, but for many of us, cold, hard cash is our most scarce commodity.
The bad thing about high fuel costs is that they?re difficult to escape. Don?t want to spend hundreds of dollars …

Getting a Passport Renewal from Abroad
American citizens can renew passports abroad at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate general. Some embassies and consulates allow passport renewal applications to be sent by mail while others require the applicant schedule an appointment and personally submit the form. Be sure NOT to mail the application to the United States address found on the form. The only exception is American citizens living in Canada. Citizens of the United States who apply for passport renewals from Canada can mail the application and supporting documents to the address on Form DS-82 unless they need a passport in less than 2 weeks. In this case, they should contact the U.S. embassy or consulate general. The time it takes to process a passport renewal abroad can vary widely but applications are frequently processed more quickly when submitted abroad than when they are submitted in the United States. Many locations estimate processing time to be between 2 to 3 weeks. You would have to pay an additional $60 fee for expedited service to get a passport processed that fast in the United States. Applicants who need to get a passport renewed in less time can visit the nearest embassy or consulate general in order to obtain a limited validity emergency passport. This can be replaced with a regular passport at a later date.

The tragedy of the massive earthquake, ensuing tsunami and volatile nuclear situation that continues to unfold across the Pacific in Japan has wrenched the hearts of sympathetic Americans. It is difficult to imagine the devastation and loss already, let alone begin to conceive a return to normal ? especially as a nuclear threat still looms.
With that said, Delta Air Lines resumed its normal flight schedule to Tokyo on Monday after canceling flights over the weekend. Even as threats of radiation leaks grew higher yesterday, Delta and American Airlines said normal operations would continue.
Other than those involved with relief efforts, I wonder how many will be traveling as normal to Tokyo or the rest of Japan. The U.S. government has issued a travel alert, urging Americans to avoid travel to Japan over the next month. On Monday, however, Delta said it continues to see strong bookings.

What are the steps for renewing a child's passport?
A passport issued to a minor age 16 or younger cannot be renewed by mail using form DS-82. Rather, it is necessary for the child to appear with both parents at an application acceptance facility in order to apply for a new passport. When the minor appears with only one parent, the applying parent must submit either evidence of sole legal custody or notarized consent from the non-applying parent. Required documents include the completed application Form DS-11, evidence of U.S. citizenship, proof of child/parent relationship, ID of parent(s), photocopy of identification document(s) and passport photo. The application can be submitted at an application acceptance facility for routine or expedited processing service.
