Can I renew my passport if it has been damaged?

Significantly damaged American passport that has been invalidated. In order to renew a U.S. passport by mail, the passport cannot be significantly damaged. Significant damage does not refer to normal wear and tear. It is perfectly normal for page corners to get bent, the emblem on the front cover to become faded and inside pages to get a little dirty from handling. Things that can lead to invalidation of a passport include significant tears or holes in the travel document, especially the cover or data page. Unoffical markings on the data page can also get it invalidated. You can apply for a passport renewal by mail if it has only normal wear and tear. If it has significant damage, you need to visit an application acceptance facility in order to apply for a new one. We recommend that applicants who are uncertain about the degree of damage, apply for a new passport. If you try to apply for a renewal with Form DS-82 and your passport is determined to be significanly damaged, you could be asked to apply again using Form DS-11 and required to pay additional fees.

CDC Health Information for International Travel 2014

CDC Health Information for International Travel 2014: The Yellow BookHealth and safety are concerns of every traveler, especially those who visit international destinations. An important resource for discovering up-to-date health recommendations and safety tips is the CDC Health Information for International Travel 2014: The Yellow Book. Updated by a team of nearly two hundred experts, this book has all the latest recommendations from the American government for citizens of the U.S. who travel abroad. The product description states the following. "Clearly written and featuring full-color illustrations, the book provides easy-to-read disease risk maps, information on where to find health care during travel, advice for those traveling with infants and children, a comprehensive catalog of diseases, and detailed country-specific health warnings. For example, the section on the Caribbean lays out the recommended immunizations and examines specific health risks for travelers to the region, ranging from malaria to dengue, yellow fever, and traveler's diarrhea. But the book goes beyond the risk of disease to discuss dangers such as violent crime-fortunately, not a great danger to tourists in the area-and also to remind travelers that the single greatest cause of injury death among visitors are traffic accidents. The section on the Caribbean also notes hurricane season and outlines the risks involved in snorkeling, diving, and other water activities common to the area." Amazon carries The Yellow Book in both paperback and Kindle versions. Click here to get the CDC Health Information for International Travel 2014

Al Qaeda Threat Leads to Closing of U.S. Embassies and Consulates

The U.S. Department of State issued a Worldwide Travel Alert due to a hightened threat of terrorist attacks.

Recommended safety precautions for American citizens.

1. Defer travel to Middle East and North Africa, if possible.

The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula. Current information suggests that al-Qa?ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August.

2. Enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don't have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. 3. Stay alert. U.S. citizens should take every precaution to be aware of their surroundings and to adopt appropriate safety measures to protect themselves when traveling. 4. Keep informed. Follow the Department of State on Twitter and the Bureau of Consular Affairs page on Facebook. Download the free Smart Traveler app, available through  iTunes or  Google Play, to have travel information at your fingertips.  In addition to information on the internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or, from other countries, on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Friday, Eastern Time (except U.S. federal holidays). Up Up And Away

For every holiday there are a couple of things on a list that originally made you want to go to that particular place.... a new trail.... a new people or custom.... or in my case for this particular holiday a new landscape. 10 Days among the Maasai of Kenya

3 Maasai men in traditional dressEven if you know little about Kenya, you have probably heard of the Maasai. Who hasn't seen a photo or watched a video of a group of tall, thin Maasai warriors performing the adumu or "the jumping dance" as it is often called? Michael Benanav, founder of Traditional Cultural Project and author of Men of Salt: Crossing the Sahara on the Caravan of White Gold, gives us a better understanding of the Maasai lifestyle in his article, "10 Days among the Maasai of Kenya". The author describes how he witnessed a circumcision ceremony, ate the local food, visited a weekly livestock market, bathed in the Maji Moto hot springs, went on guided hikes and was introduced to the "widows' village". During his time of immersion in the world of the Maasai, Mr. Benanav was given the opportunity to trade stories with members of the community and openly share about their cultural differences. For an insider's look into the lifestyle of the Maasai and to learn how you can participate in such an adventure, be sure to read the full article in the travel section of the NY Times. Note: A valid passport and visa for Kenya are required of all U.S. citizens who want to enter the country.

Paraty the journey from hell

After a boat back to the mainland and a 2 hour mini bus journey we arrived in Paraty. Our hostel was right on the beach front and the beach bar had a lot of locals playing music and drinking straight away this seemed like a really relaxed place. However the relaxation didnt last long as Freeman realised he had left his iPhone on the bus leading to a two hour panic trying to hunt the bus down a

What to Do When Your Passport is Full

U.S. Passport full of travel visas and entry stamps. Many countries require a certain number of blank pages in a passport before they will issue a visa. If your passport only has 2-4 blank pages remaining and you need to obtain muliple visas, you may have a problem. There are a couple of ways you can remedy this depending on the expiration date of your passport and hwo frequently you travel. One, you can apply to add pages to your passport. All you need to do is mail the completed Form DS-4085 along with your current, valid U.S. passport and payment of $82 to the address on the form. You can choose to have 48 visa pages added to your passport instead of the standard 24 pages. Adding pages to your passport will not change its validity. Therefore, the second option is a better one if your passport only has a year or two before it expires and you do not think you will need all the added pages for visas and entry stamps. Two, you can apply for a renewal by mail. You will be issued a new passport with a validity of 10 years. If you plan to travel extensively over the next 10 years, you can check the box on the application form to receive the 52-page passport book rather than the one with only 28 pages. In addition to the completed Form DS-82, you need to send your current passport, a recent passport photo and payment in the amount of $110 for the renewal application fee. If your name has been legally changed, you also need to include evidence of this. Note, you cannot apply for added pages or a renewal by mail if your passport is significantly damaged. In this case, you need to appear at an application acceptance facility in order to apply for a new passport. Applications for both added pages and renewals are processed in 4-6 weeks for routine service. You can request expedited service by mail to get the process completed in 2-3 weeks. There is an additional fee of $60 to expedite either form. To have either application processed more quickly, you need to schedule an appointment at the nearest regional agency and either submit the application yourself or authorize a third party to do it for you. This can be a friend, relative, travel agent or registered passport expediting courier service.

Cover to Cover: Passports with Purpose 2011

If you are reading this article, that's wonderful! It means two things to me: 1) you were given the opportunity to learn such a skill, and 2) you have had some type of access to real hand-held books at certain points in life. Though I spend a great portion of my time reading, much of it is now from online sources. I sigh as I pass the collection of bound printed paper calling out for attention. Most display bookmarks somewhere within their depths. All are begging me to pick up them up where I'd left off. I sigh again as I tell them 'hopefully tomorrow'...

10 Regional Passport Agencies Where Travel Plans Are Not Required for Expedited Passport Service

There are twenty-five regional passport agencies where American citizens can apply to get passports expedited as quickly as the same day. As a general rule, applicants must present proof of international travel within 2 weeks of the appointment or proof of emergency abroad. If a travel visa is needed in order to travel abroad, evidence of travel within 4 weeks is acceptable.

This rule allows the passport agencies to prioritize those whose travel plans require they obtain passports in a hurry. This is especially important at agencies that receive a large volume of application forms. However, there are several agencies that do not have such a high demand. The 10 agencies that do not require evidence of travel can be found in the following locations.
  • Arkansas
  • Buffalo
  • Colorado
  • Detroit
  • El Paso
  • Honolulu
  • Minneapolis
  • San Diego
  • Seattle
  • Vermont
Citizens of the United States who live in or near the agencies listed above can apply for expedited passport service even if they do not have any travel plans. This is beneficial for those who know they will travel abroad in the near future but have no set date. They can go ahead and get their passports so that they are ready to go no matter when the opportunity arrives. It is also an advantage to those who need to change the name in a passport but do not want to send original documents by mail. The truth is that millions of applicants mail in original documents every year and have them returned. Occasionally one will get lost in the mail. Those who prefer not to run that risk can apply in person. Many expedited passport courier services have representatives that submit applications for clients at these regional agencies. This means that they can almost always get a passport expedited quickly even if the agency closest to the applicant has no opening.

Applying for an Expedited Passport Renewal in New Jersey

American citizens in New Jersey can apply for expedited passport renewals by mailing the application, visiting a regional passport agency or employing the services of a registered expediting courier service.

The estimated processing time for renewal applications that are mailed to the address on Form DS-82 is two to three weeks. Applicants should add the expedited service fee of $60 to their payment and write the word "Expedite" on the outside of the envelope.

Those who need to renew a passport within 14 days or 30 days if a visa is also required can schedule an appointment at a regional agency. The closest agencies to New Jersey are located in New York and Philadelphia. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 1-877-487-2778. An alternative for anyone not able to visit a regional agency is to authorize a third party to submit the application for them. This can be a friend, family member, travel agent or an expedited passport courier service. Written authorization must be presented to the agent. Note, you cannot apply for a renewal by mail if your previously-issued passport was issued when you were age 15 or younger, expired more than 5 years ago or is significantly damaged. If any of these apply, you must appear in person in order to get a new passport. There are currently 275 passport offices in New Jersey. Both Jersey City and Trenton have 4 application acceptance facilities while New Brunswick, Newark, Plainfield and Toms River has 3 each. You can apply for expedited service in 2-3 weeks at any of these location or have the form adjudicated and then sent to a courier service. You can also visit either of the agencies mentioned above to expedite a new passport application.
