Should I wait until 16?

As far as passports are concerned, 16 is the age at which your passport switches from a minor to an adult. If your passport is issued as a minor, it is only valid for 5 years. An adult passport is valid for 10 years. Furthermore, if you got your passport as a minor, you will need to apply for a new passport as an adult, rather than renew it.

Given all of that, we frequently get questions about passports expiring before age 16 and readers wondering if they should just wait until they are 16 to get a new one.

If you don't need to travel (or forsee a travel emergency) during the lapse, we believe this is the way to go!
