Emergency Contact Information

When you apply for a passport, section 18 asks for emergency contact information. We received a reader question asking about who qualifies as an emergency contact.

This particular reader has no family residing in the United States, but has friends. Is it better to put down a friend from the US or a relative from overseas?

Who to list as an emergency contact is a completely personal decision. The emergency contact will only be used in very serious cases such as kidnapping, imprisonment, or death. You need to ask yourself who would be best equipped and able to handle these situations.. Basically, there are no rules on who can be your emergency contact!
