Passport Expires but Visa Does Not

Certain countries require a visa in addition to a United States passport to enter. You do not have to apply for visas at the same time as your passport. Therefore, your passport may expire before your visas. We answered this reader question a while ago, but many people still have this question!

If my passport expired, can I still use my visa?

The answer depends on what country you are traveling to. Either way, you must still renew your passport. Some countries will let you travel with a new passport AND your expired passport with the visa in it. Others you will need a new visa. Our page tells you which countries are which!
