How much does it cost to renew a passport?

United States ePassport and tablet on table. The application fee to renew a passport by mail is $110. There is an optional fee of $60 for expedited service if you need to get your passport renewed in 2 to 3 weeks instead of the 4 to 6 weeks it takes for standard processing. There is also an optional fee of $12.85 for overnight delivery of your new passport. All these fees are paid to the Department of State. American citizens who need to get a passport renewed in less than 2 weeks must submit the application at a regional agency. The fees are the same as those listed above. Of course, the overnight delivery fee will not be necessary if you pick up your new passport at the agency. Those who need a passport renewal quickly but are unable to visit a regional agency, can authorize a registered expediting service to submit the application on your behalf. The fees for this service vary depending on how fast you need to renew your passport. It could be as little as $79 to as much as several hundred dollars for same day service. Other expenses that an applicant may incur when renewing a passport include the cost of passport photos, postage, transportation, food and lodging. The faster you need to get the passport renewed, the more it will cost. For this reason, U.S. citizens are encouraged to apply for passport renewals as early as nine months prior to the date of expiration. For more information, visit our passport renewal FAQ page.
