What are the steps for renewing a child's passport?
A passport issued to a minor age 16 or younger cannot be renewed by mail using form DS-82. Rather, it is necessary for the child to appear with both parents at an application acceptance facility in order to apply for a new passport. When the minor appears with only one parent, the applying parent must submit either evidence of sole legal custody or notarized consent from the non-applying parent. Required documents include the completed application Form DS-11, evidence of U.S. citizenship, proof of child/parent relationship, ID of parent(s), photocopy of identification document(s) and passport photo. The application can be submitted at an application acceptance facility for routine or expedited processing service. Those who need to get a child's passport in less than two weeks can schedule an appointment at a regional agency or employ the services of a registered passport and visa courier.
