Where to Apply for a Passport in Person
American citizens can apply for a passport in person in the United States at an application acceptance facility or a regional passport agency. There are thousands of application acceptance facilities in the United States. The majority are located in post offices but they can also be found in a few public libraries and local government offices. Passport applications submitted at these locations have an estimated processing time of 4-6 weeks for standard service and 2-3 weeks for expedited service. There are 25 regional passport agencies located in major U.S. cities. They process applications for applicants who need to get a passport within 14 days either to travel abroad or to submit for the issuance of a foreign entry visa. All agencies issue passport books but not all of them issue passport cards. Passports applications are processed at the agencies within 5 business days. It can be as fast as the same day. American citizens who are traveling abroad can apply for a passport in person at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate general.
