What to Do When Your Passport is Full
Many countries require a certain number of blank pages in a passport before they will issue a visa. If your passport only has 2-4 blank pages remaining and you need to obtain muliple visas, you may have a problem. There are a couple of ways you can remedy this depending on the expiration date of your passport and hwo frequently you travel. One, you can apply to add pages to your passport. All you need to do is mail the completed Form DS-4085 along with your current, valid U.S. passport and payment of $82 to the address on the form. You can choose to have 48 visa pages added to your passport instead of the standard 24 pages. Adding pages to your passport will not change its validity. Therefore, the second option is a better one if your passport only has a year or two before it expires and you do not think you will need all the added pages for visas and entry stamps. Two, you can apply for a renewal by mail. You will be issued a new passport with a validity of 10 years. If you plan to travel extensively over the next 10 years, you can check the box on the application form to receive the 52-page passport book rather than the one with only 28 pages. In addition to the completed Form DS-82, you need to send your current passport, a recent passport photo and payment in the amount of $110 for the renewal application fee. If your name has been legally changed, you also need to include evidence of this. Note, you cannot apply for added pages or a renewal by mail if your passport is significantly damaged. In this case, you need to appear at an application acceptance facility in order to apply for a new passport. Applications for both added pages and renewals are processed in 4-6 weeks for routine service. You can request expedited service by mail to get the process completed in 2-3 weeks. There is an additional fee of $60 to expedite either form. To have either application processed more quickly, you need to schedule an appointment at the nearest regional agency and either submit the application yourself or authorize a third party to do it for you. Does the low number of American passports shock you?

In the coming weeks and months, two members of my family will be taking major ?first? trips. As we have been preparing our daughter for her first trip to Europe and my husband for his first trip to Asia, I ran across this CNN story that surprised me. At least, it surprised me at first. The report states that only 30 percent of American citizens hold passports.
If that seems to you like a pretty low number, you?re not alone. In the story, the U.S. Travel Association?s Bruce Bommarito said 30 percent is too low for such an affluent country as the United States. As I read, I nodded along. Why don?t more Americans have passports? I mean, really, my young daughter has one.
Then, I remembered. My own passport has expired, and while I have said several times over the past year that I need to renew it?I haven?t yet.

Getting a Passport Renewal from Abroad
American citizens can renew passports abroad at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate general. Some embassies and consulates allow passport renewal applications to be sent by mail while others require the applicant schedule an appointment and personally submit the form. The time it takes to process a passport renewal abroad can vary widely but applications are frequently processed more quickly when submitted abroad than when they are submitted in the United States. Many locations estimate processing time to be between 2 to 3 weeks. You would have to pay an additional $60 fee for expedited service to get a passport processed that fast in the United States. Applicants who need to get a passport renewed in less time can visit the nearest embassy or consulate general in order to obtain a limited validity emergency passport. This can be replaced with a regular passport at a later date.
