Passport for Green-Card Holder?

We received a reader question asking about

Guddy's daughter has been living with a green card for 5 years and Guddy is a citizen. Can her daughter obtain a passport? US Passports are only issued to US Citizens. Therefore, Guddy's daughter cannot get a passport right now, unless she becomes a US Citizen.

However, a child born outside of the United States automatically becomes a citizen by naturalization if the child is under 18, possesses a green card, and lives with her parents. This situation may apply to you, Guddy, if your daughter is under 18!
