Reader question! Deborah from Florida asked us if she needs to send in her child's original birth certificate to apply for a passport or if a copy will work.
While it would seem that a copy of the birth certificate would work because it has all of the information, it won't work for the passport. This is to prevent passport fraud.
However, you also do not need to send your child's original birth certificate either. You can write to the vital records office and get a certified copy with a raised seal.
