Al Qaeda Threat Leads to Closing of U.S. Embassies and Consulates
The U.S. Department of State issued a Worldwide Travel Alert due to a hightened threat of terrorist attacks.
Recommended safety precautions for American citizens.
1. Defer travel to Middle East and North Africa, if possible.
The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula. Current information suggests that al-Qa?ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August.
2. Enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don't have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. 3. Stay alert. U.S. citizens should take every precaution to be aware of their surroundings and to adopt appropriate safety measures to protect themselves when traveling. 4. Keep informed. What to Do When Your Passport is Full
Many countries require a certain number of blank pages in a passport before they will issue a visa. If your passport only has 2-4 blank pages remaining and you need to obtain muliple visas, you may have a problem. There are a couple of ways you can remedy this depending on the expiration date of your passport and hwo frequently you travel. One, you can apply to add pages to your passport. All you need to do is mail the completed Form DS-4085 along with your current, valid U.S. passport and payment of $82 to the address on the form. You can choose to have 48 visa pages added to your passport instead of the standard 24 pages. Adding pages to your passport will not change its validity. Therefore, the second option is a better one if your passport only has a year or two before it expires and you do not think you will need all the added pages for visas and entry stamps. Two, you can apply for a renewal by mail. You will be issued a new passport with a validity of 10 years. If you plan to travel extensively over the next 10 years, you can check the box on the application form to receive the 52-page passport book rather than the one with only 28 pages. In addition to the completed Form DS-82, you need to send your current passport, a recent passport photo and payment in the amount of $110 for the renewal application fee. If your name has been legally changed, you also need to include evidence of this. Note, you cannot apply for added pages or a renewal by mail if your passport is significantly damaged. In this case, you need to appear at an application acceptance facility in order to apply for a new passport. Applications for both added pages and renewals are processed in 4-6 weeks for routine service. You can request expedited service by mail to get the process completed in 2-3 weeks. There is an additional fee of $60 to expedite either form. To have either application processed more quickly, you need to schedule an appointment at the nearest regional agency and either submit the application yourself or authorize a third party to do it for you. I have had vacations ruined by various factors over the years, but my relationship with my travel companion was never one of them. The tragedy of the massive earthquake, ensuing tsunami and volatile nuclear situation that continues to unfold across the Pacific in Japan has wrenched the hearts of sympathetic Americans. It is difficult to imagine the devastation and loss already, let alone begin to conceive a return to normal ? especially as a nuclear threat still looms.
With that said, Delta Air Lines resumed its normal flight schedule to Tokyo on Monday after canceling flights over the weekend. Even as threats of radiation leaks grew higher yesterday, Delta and American Airlines said normal operations would continue.
Other than those involved with relief efforts, I wonder how many will be traveling as normal to Tokyo or the rest of Japan. The U.S. government has issued a travel alert, urging Americans to avoid travel to Japan over the next month. On Monday, however, Delta said it continues to see strong bookings.

The time it takes to process a passport renewal abroad can vary widely but applications are frequently processed more quickly when submitted abroad than when they are submitted in the United States. Many locations estimate processing time to be between 2 to 3 weeks. You would have to pay an additional $60 fee for expedited service to get a passport processed that fast in the United States. Applicants who need to get a passport renewed in less time can visit the nearest embassy or consulate general in order to obtain a limited validity emergency passport. This can be replaced with a regular passport at a later date.
