In the coming weeks and months, two members of my family will be taking major ?first? trips. As we have been preparing our daughter for her first trip to Europe and my husband for his first trip to Asia, I ran across this CNN story that surprised me. At least, it surprised me at first. The report states that only 30 percent of American citizens hold passports.
If that seems to you like a pretty low number, you?re not alone. In the story, the U.S. Travel Association?s Bruce Bommarito said 30 percent is too low for such an affluent country as the United States. As I read, I nodded along. Why don?t more Americans have passports? I mean, really, my young daughter has one.

American citizens can renew passports abroad at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate general. Some embassies and consulates allow passport renewal applications to be sent by mail while others require the applicant schedule an appointment and personally submit the form. The time it takes to process a passport renewal abroad can vary widely but applications are frequently processed more quickly when submitted abroad than when they are submitted in the United States. Can I renew my passport if it has been damaged?
In order to renew a U.S. passport by mail, the passport cannot be significantly damaged. Significant damage does not refer to normal wear and tear. It is perfectly normal for page corners to get bent, the emblem on the front cover to become faded and inside pages to get a little dirty from handling. Things that can lead to invalidation of a passport include significant tears or holes in the travel document, especially the cover or data page. Unoffical markings on the data page can also get it invalidated. You can apply for a passport renewal by mail if it has only normal wear and tear. If it has significant damage, you need to visit an application acceptance facility in order to apply for a new one. We recommend that applicants who are uncertain about the degree of damage, apply for a new passport. When you have the chance to get away unexpectedly, how do you decide where to go? It?s not a vacation. You don?t have time to really plan. Nor is it a romantic getaway, where the agenda pretty much sets itself. SPHemos salido tardisimo esta maana. Hemos hecho reparaciones varias casi hasta las 2 luego en el centro hemos intentado conseguir informacion sobre vuelos en avioneta y barcos para ir al sur. Ademas hemos intentado sin exito reservar billete en el barco en el lago General Carrera. Saliamos de Coyaique a las 1630 y hemos ido a toda pastilla con una sola parada para comer un par de gallet

If it has significant damage, you need to visit an application acceptance facility in order to apply for a new one. We recommend that applicants who are uncertain about the degree of damage, apply for a new passport.
