Al Qaeda Threat Leads to Closing of U.S. Embassies and Consulates

The U.S. Department of State issued a Worldwide Travel Alert due to a hightened threat of terrorist attacks.

Recommended safety precautions for American citizens.

1. Defer travel to Middle East and North Africa, if possible.

The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula. Current information suggests that al-Qa?ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August.

2. Enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don't have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. 3. Stay alert. U.S. citizens should take every precaution to be aware of their surroundings and to adopt appropriate safety measures to protect themselves when traveling. 4. Keep informed. Follow the Department of State on Twitter and the Bureau of Consular Affairs page on Facebook. Download the free Smart Traveler app, available through  iTunes or  Google Play, to have travel information at your fingertips.  In addition to information on the internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or, from other countries, on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Friday, Eastern Time (except U.S. federal holidays). American citizens can renew passports abroad at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate general. Some embassies and consulates allow passport renewal applications to be sent by mail while others require the applicant schedule an appointment and personally submit the form. Applicants who need to get a passport renewed in less time can visit the nearest embassy or consulate general in order to obtain a limited validity emergency passport. This can be replaced with a regular passport at a later date.

10 Regional Passport Agencies Where Travel Plans Are Not Required for Expedited Passport Service

There are twenty-five regional passport agencies where American citizens can apply to get passports expedited as quickly as the same day. As a general rule, applicants must present proof of international travel within 2 weeks of the appointment or proof of emergency abroad. If a travel visa is needed in order to travel abroad, evidence of travel within 4 weeks is acceptable.

This rule allows the passport agencies to prioritize those whose travel plans require they obtain passports in a hurry. This is especially important at agencies that receive a large volume of application forms. However, there are several agencies that do not have such a high demand. The 10 agencies that do not require evidence of travel can be found in the following locations.

Citizens of the United States who live in or near the agencies listed above can apply for expedited passport service even if they do not have any travel plans. This is beneficial for those who know they will travel abroad in the near future but have no set date. They can go ahead and get their passports so that they are ready to go no matter when the opportunity arrives. It is also an advantage to those who need to change the name in a passport but do not want to send original documents by mail. The truth is that millions of applicants mail in original documents every year and have them returned. Occasionally one will get lost in the mail. Those who prefer not to run that risk can apply in person. Many expedited passport courier services have representatives that submit applications for clients at these regional agencies. This means that they can almost always get a passport expedited quickly even if the agency closest to the applicant has no opening.

In the coming weeks and months, two members of my family will be taking major ?first? trips. As we have been preparing our daughter for her first trip to Europe and my husband for his first trip to Asia, I ran across this CNN story that surprised me. At least, it surprised me at first. The report states that only 30 percent of American citizens hold passports.

If that seems to you like a pretty low number, you?re not alone. In the story, the U.S. Travel Association?s Bruce Bommarito said 30 percent is too low for such an affluent country as the United States. As I read, I nodded along. American citizens in New Jersey can apply for expedited passport renewals by mailing the application, visiting a regional passport agency or employing the services of a registered expediting courier service.

The estimated processing time for renewal applications that are mailed to the address on Form DS-82 is two to three weeks. Applicants should add the expedited service fee of $60 to their payment and write the word "Expedite" on the outside of the envelope.

Those who need to renew a passport within 14 days or 30 days if a visa is also required can schedule an appointment at a regional agency. The closest agencies to New Jersey are located in New York and Philadelphia. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 1-877-487-2778. An alternative for anyone not able to visit a regional agency is to authorize a third party to submit the application for them. This can be a friend, family member, travel agent or an expedited passport courier service. Written authorization must be presented to the agent. Note, you cannot apply for a renewal by mail if your previously-issued passport was issued when you were age 15 or younger, expired more than 5 years ago or is significantly damaged. If any of these apply, you must appear in person in order to get a new passport. There are currently 275 passport offices in New Jersey. Both Jersey City and Trenton have 4 application acceptance facilities while New Brunswick, Newark, Plainfield and Toms River has 3 each. You can apply for expedited service in 2-3 weeks at any of these location or have the form adjudicated and then sent to a courier service. You can also visit either of the agencies mentioned above to expedite a new passport application.
